Patient Safety:
Reducing
Medical Errors
This guide is an introductory list to help locate research materials at the Rowland Medical Library. Issues of medical error and patient safety have been silently ignored for a long time. The Institute of Medicine published a report in 1999 that identified medical errors as the eighth leading cause of death in the United States. Though the health industry and the public have been slow to react to the magnitude of this problem, patient safety is now emerging as a national health care priority led by government initiatives to improve the quality of health care. Early in 2003 the JCAHO developed new patient care safety standards for healthcare facilities seeking accreditation.
