Ergonomics
This guide is an introductory list to help locate research materials at the Rowland Medical Library. Ergonomics is an interdisciplinary field that has been described as fitting the task to the worker. Ergonomics deals with interactions between people and the total working environment and stresses related to such environmental elements as atmosphere, heat, light, and sound, as well as all tools and equipment in the workplace. The formal study of human work began at the turn of the century with time and motion studies; after World War II the need to optimize human performance and safety was noted. The study of ergonomics has evolved in four main areas: human factors engineering, anthropometry, occupational biomechanics and work physiology. The benefits of these studies are measured both in terms of human efficiency and well being.
