Geographic Information Systems
This guide is an introductory list to help locate research materials at the Rowland Medical Library. Geographic information systems (GIS) are electronic analytical mapping tools. Like other computerized information systems they include input, storage, retrieval and output functions. GIS differ in two ways. The first is that the information is geographically referenced (geocoded). The second is the capability of spatial data analysis. Results are usually presented as maps or images making it easier for researchers to understand the data correlations. Uses of geographic information systems range from management and planning to research in medicine, business and engineering.
