Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease
and "Mad Cow Disease"

This guide is an introductory list to help locate research materials at the Rowland Medical Library. Variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (vCJD) is the human form of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), or "mad cow disease", which results from infection by an unconventional transmissible agent.  The nature of this agent is still unknown, but generally believed is prion protein, a pathogenic form of the protein that is both less soluble and more resistant to enzyme degradation than the normal form. Consumption of contaminated beef products, whole blood transfusions by pathogen-carrier donors might cause transmission of the disease.
