Vibrio
Vulnificus Infections
This guide is an introductory list to help locate research materials at the Rowland Medical Library. Vibrio vulnificus, a non-cholera vibrio is an important cause of cellulitis and septicemia, which may follow ingestion of contaminated shellfish or exposure to contaminated sea water. Cellulitis accompanied by bulla formation and necrosis may cause extensive soft tissue destruction. Immunocompromised individuals, especially those with liver disease are at the highest risk, and the death rate can be as high as 50%. Treatment includes antibiotics, and sometimes requires surgical removal of damaged soft tissue and amputation.
