FRIENDS OF THE
ROWLAND MEDICAL LIBRARY

THE ORGANIZATION

The Friends of the Rowland Medical Library was organized in 1994. The organization's purpose is to foster and support the library's programs, resources and facilities. Dorothy (Mrs. Frances) Morrison served as its founding President from October, 1993-April 1994 until the adoption of the Constitution and Bylaws and election of officers.

Charter officers serving from April 1994-June 1996 were President-Dr. Robert E. Lewis, Jr., Professor, Dept. of Pathology; Vice-president-Jeanette Waits, retired Professor, School of Nursing; and Secretary-treasurer-Marilyn (Mrs. Robert) Currier. The first meeting of the 21 member Board of Directors was held April 17, 1996. The Board meets annually in April and October. The annual membership meeting is held in October. The 1996/97 officers were President: Dr. Harold B. White, retired professor of biochemistry; Vice-president: Dr. Gretchen Haines, and Secretary-treasurer: Jane Tallant, Instructor of Nursing.

The Friends have supported and participated in the celebration of National Library Week in April since 1994 and Medical Librarians' Month (for one week) in October since 1996. During that week, Friends conduct membership drives and sponsor receptions which coincide with the weeks' principle events. In 1995, Friends assumed the sponsorship of the Dean Billy S. Guyton Lecture on the History of Medicine, initiated in 1989 by Dr. Julius Cruse, UMC Professor of Pathology.

There are nine categories of Friends' membership. Those categories and annual dues are:

Life memberships also are available for a one-time gift of $10,000. Those who joined during 1994 are recognized on the organization's charter member plaque which will hang permanently in the library.

All membership categories are open to individuals and nonprofit organizations. The membership year is from July-June. Members are listed by membership category in SOURCE each quarter. Contributions made to Friends in the benefactor, grand benefactor or lifetime categories are placed in the Rowland Medical Library Endowment Fund.

MEMBERSHIP BENEFITS

  1. All friends will receive a subscription to SOURCE, the Rowland Medical Library's quarterly newsletter.
  2. Members receive invitations to all special events sponsored by the library and the Medical Center Archives and History Committee.
  3. Dues and contributions are tax deductible.

MEMORIALS

What better way to honor the memory of a loved one than to contribute a gift in their name to Rowland Medical Library.  All gifts are acknowledged to both the donor and the honoree's family and in all RML publications.   A gift of $1,000 or more entitles the donor to recognition in the Rowland Medical Library Patrons' Circle of Honor.
