Logging in to UMC
Resources
If you are trying to get to
the UMC faculty, student & staff section of the Library webpage or if
you click on an "Off Campus Login Required"
(and you are off campus) on any Library webpage, you will be asked to enter
your Library assigned login & password.
For further assistance, contact
the Reference Desk at (601) 984-1231.
Questions?
The UMC web page login process:
Do you get two boxes or
three boxes or are you an AOL User
or a Mac User?
Type "lib_dom" without
the quotation marks in the box that asks for the domain name. Please
note that lib_dom utilizes an UNDERSCORE and not a dash.
| User Name: |
jdoe |
| Password: |
xxxxxx |
| Domain: |
lib_dom |
If you are using AOL dial up
services, launch the session in order to establish a connection to the
Internet, then minimize AOL and start Internet Explorer from your Windows
desktop. If you are using a cable modem or ISDN modem to access the
Internet, just click on the big blue E and go straight to the Library web
site, without even starting AOL services. Once at the Library site,
you can then login as explained in the first two bullets.
The Safari browser
will not work, you will need to download
Firefox but you
do not need to use the lib_dom\ prefix with your username.
When logging in to an
Off-Campus Resource:
(e-journal, text, etc.) you do not need the domain name.
Questions?
- Don't have a Library login? You can apply
here (UMC faculty, staff & students only).
- Not sure about your Library login or
password? Contact the Reference Desk at (601) 984-1231.
- Why do we ask you to log in?
Here's why.
- Why do some people get two boxes and some
three? That's determined by your operating system and browser--not by
the library.
- Why do I have to use lib_dom in my login?
For security reasons the Library has more than one domain and the server
just needs to know which one you're logging into.
Why we ask
you to log in: It's not really just to cause you problems--really.
We sign agreements with the providers of our electronic journals, texts and
databases agreeing to restrict access to UMC faculty, students and staff
only. Since we include vendor supplied logins and passwords on our
pages and we also use a proxy server to allow off-campus access to IP
validated resources (the proxy server fools the resource into thinking
you're on campus even when you're at home), the library login process allows
us to be in compliance with our vendors while at the same time providing you
with the maximum access to all our resources.
