Library Pointers

Reference Tips

Where to start:

Use the Rowland Medical Library Catalog to locate books or audiovisuals in the collection and to find out what journals are available here. The online catalogs can be used at any of the stand-up stations. They are available for all library users.

Use one of the online databases to find journal articles on a subject or by an author or to verify a citation.

UMC students, faculty, and staff may use the databases at computer stations 2-8 and 21-23.  Computer station 1 is designed for CD-ROM access. Ask for the CD-ROM at the Reference Desk.

Looking for Journals…

Location, location, location:

Bindery info: Every month journals are sent out of the library to be bound. The binding process takes about seven weeks from start to finish. In the online catalog, any journal issue that has been sent to the bindery has a location code of At Bindery. To find out when the journal issue will be back and available for use, check with the librarian at the Reference Desk.

Journal Incompletes…

At the online catalog, the locator code INCOMPLETES means that some issues of that volume(number) of the journal are missing. The journal could not be bound and put in the journal stacks for check-out. Instead, the issues are kept in the Technical Services Dept. and assigned the designation INCOMPLETES.

UMC students, faculty, and staff may request an article from INCOMPLETES by filling out a special form available at the Reference Desk. Staff will photocopy the article for the requestor; turnaround time is 24 hours and the charge is $.15 per page.

 Check It Out…

Help from the Circulation Desk:

"Missing in Action." Have you ever had a problem locating a book or journal in the stacks? Have you searched for a book or journal for several days, only to find that it never made its way back to the shelf, even though the online catalog shows that it is available? If you have searched the stacks and the item cannot be located, fill out a missing item card at the Circulation Desk. After the missing item card is completed the Circulation staff will search the library for the item. Searches for missing items are done weekly and if found, patrons are notified. After the second search patrons are notified of the status of the book or journal. At that time, Interlibrary Loan (ILL) may be used to obtain a book of copy of an article. If you have questions, please ask the staff at the Circulation Desk.

Interlibrary Loan

If you can’t get it here:

Our library borrows materials from other libraries for UMC students, faculty and staff. Request forms are available at the Interlibrary Loan office, as well as at the Reference and Circulation Desks. Delivery time for materials ranges from a few days (journal articles) to several weeks (books). Costs that might be assessed by lending libraries are charged to library users. Students enrolled in undergraduate programs, medical and dental schools, are not usually charged for ILL. If materials are requested through a document delivery service a copyright fee may be charged.
